Liestman Families-
It is incredible to think that we will be in October next week! In addition to teaching and measuring learning through curriculum assessments, August/September has been about collecting beginning of the year diagnostic data for reading (K-4), math (K-4), ESL and social-emotional (3rd-4th) learning. As communicated in last week's Smore, part of our Title 1 School Compact requires that teachers, parents, and students meet minimumly one time in the fall and one time in the spring to review learning progress. It is our goal at Liestman to empower our students to collect and analyze their own data with teacher and parent support, so that they may reflect on their growth from cycle to cycle. Students will keep a student data folder to track their growth across multiple measures and will use a portfolio to collect chosen student work samples that reflect a growth mindset, effort, and the use of learning strategies. The role of a student in traditional parent-teacher conferences is passive. In student-led conferences (SLCs), the student leads their parents and teacher in a reflective conversation using thier data folder and portfolio to: 1) communicate their goals, 2) review their progress, and 3) ask for help where needed. As we conclude the 1st 9 weeks, I encourage parents to schedule a parent-teacher conference as communicated by teachers during the Fall Open House. Note, the last day for fall conferences is December 20th.
Included in this communication (see attachments) is an update regarding Alief's parent medical authorization process for children. Moving forward (note- does not apply to prescriptions), parents are required to submit the authorization form in order for students to recieve medication. I have included for your review a list of district approved medications that can be dispensed from our clinic. Please return the medical authorization form by October 4th. Parents may call the school's clinic for further questions regarding this topic. I wish you a good week...
