Houston, TX - In an era that has tested the resilience and innovation of educators across the globe, the Houston Area Urban League has shone a spotlight on twelve remarkable individuals who have risen above the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to continue inspiring, leading, and transforming lives. Among these distinguished educators are Ms. Katrina Harris, Mrs. Sherita Harmon, and Mr. Seymour Stewart, whose exemplary contributions have earned them a place on the prestigious Houston Area Urban League Educator Champions Team.

A Beacon of Health Science Instruction: Ms. Katrina Harris

Ms. Katrina Harris, a Health Science Teacher at Horn Elementary, is rapidly becoming renowned across the district and beyond for her extraordinary contributions to STEM education and her ambitious drive. This summer, Ms. Harris played a crucial role in launching the district's first annual Innovators Academy, emphasizing STEM development and Gifted & Talented enhancement projects. Beyond her groundbreaking work in organizing the academy, Ms. Harris demonstrates an unwavering commitment to academic excellence by devoting her time and expertise to author advanced-level curriculums. Her impact is widely recognized, marking her as a rising star within the educational community.

Shaping Future Leaders: Mrs. Sherita Harmon

Mrs. Sherita Harmon stands out as a rockstar educator in her role as a Clinical Rotation teacher. With years of dedication to preparing students for success in post-secondary settings, she has become an indispensable asset to career development and college readiness initiatives. Mrs. Harmon’s extensive involvement includes facilitating seminars with HAABSE and organizing the district's Technical Honor Society, where her efforts are pivotal in helping students navigate their future with confidence and preparedness.

A Visionary Leader: Mr. Seymour Stewart

As the Principal of Miller Intermediate, Seymour Stewart has made a lasting impression through his commitment to excellence in instructional practices. A veteran leader, Mr. Stewart has showcased his ability to think systemically, addressing and integrating complex variables to cultivate an environment conducive to learning and growth. His dedication to mentoring his staff and fostering elevated instructional levels speaks volumes of his role as a transformative figure in education.

Honoring the Champions

The accomplishments of Ms. Harris, Mrs. Harmon, and Mr. Stewart will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony on Saturday, August 24th, at Attucks Middle School Campus, 4330 Bellfort, Houston, TX 77051. The ceremony, set to commence at 11:30 am, will not only celebrate these three outstanding educators but also their fellow honorees, commending them for their significant contributions during and following the COVID-19 pandemic.

This celebration will be held in conjunction with the "One Health One Community" Town Hall Meeting, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue and community engagement from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
