Journalist Adam Winkler with ABC 13 Eyewitness News recently spent time at Hastings High School to learn more about how HHS's football team in preparing safely for the upcoming season.
Head football coach Tomas De La Rosa spoke with Winkler about his staff's focus on ensuring students meet their nutritional goals, hydrate appropriately before practice, and avoid dangerous practice scenarios brought on by record-breaking Texas temperatures thanks to implementing a UIL-recommended wet-bulb globe temperature.

As ABC13 meteorologist Elyse Smith explains it, the wet bulb globe temperature pinpoints heat-related stress on the human body while in direct sunlight. Unlike heat index, the wet-bulb globe temperature takes multiple atmospheric variables into account and dictates when and how the team practices. The temperature is tracked in various ways during the workout, including through trainer Nicki Lane's handheld device.
